The first authorized documentary of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is in the works. His daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, is executive producing the doc, which will air on HBO. It’s the first filmic investigation of the musician’s life that’s being made with the cooperation of his family.

Called Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, the documentary is in the extremely capable hands of director Brett Morgen who previously directed the Rolling Stones biopic Crossfire Hurricane for HBO. “I’m really excited for you guys to see Montage of Heck. @brettmorgen created an intense yet wonderful examination of Kurt’s life & art,” Frances Bean tweeted yesterday.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Montage of Heck has been eight years in the making, and it’s going to plumb the depths of the late Cobain in ways never seen before. “Like most people, when I started, I figured there would be limited amounts of fresh material to unearth. However, once I stepped into Kurt’s archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects — oil paintings, sculptures — countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4,000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media,” Morgen told the trade.

Morgen already tweeted a photo of the original Montage of Heck mixtape from which the documentary got its name. The tape, which Cobain made in 1988, is just one small example of the creative force we unfortunately lost 20 years ago.
