The French media can be harsh on the country’s singing starlets, but that didn’t stop “daughter-of, sister-of” Lou Doillonthat’s daughter of Jane Birkin and sister of Charlotte Gainsbourg, in case youre keeping trackfrom recording her debut album, Places, last year. “I thought [the press] would tear me apart until my friend said, Lou, they don’t much like you anyway, so what have you got to lose?’ It was a good point!”
The album was written in Doillons kitchen after a difficult break-up. “I couldn’t live without writing these songs, alone, for me, she says. But my girlfriends found out and they kept asking me to play them the songs, and it all went from there.”
ELLE.com spoke with Doillon just after she received a medal of honor from France’s Ministry of Culture, which recognized her contributions to the country’s music scene.
