Its hard to believe its been just a year since Sophia Webster launched her footwear line. Since then, the bubbly Brit and former Nicholas Kirkwood protégé has scored collaborations with Revlon and Nail Rock. She also followed in the formidable footsteps of Manolo Blahnik by designing the shoes for J.Crews spring 2014 collection, a move guaranteed to bring her playful creations to the masses.
For her own spring presentation, hosted at the Secret Garden in the Topshop Show Space on Sunday, Webster envisioned an insect slumber party. Seussian-styled models draped themselves across flower beds as they showed off heels festooned with ladybugs and polka dots. Laser-cut gladiator boots revealed a fantastical butterfly motif, while the designers new bags showcased phrases like, High Flyer and You Buggin.
Post-show, the queen of quirk dished about her insect influences, her Downton Abbey obsession, and working with Jenna Lyons.
What were you thinking about for this season?
I was looking at butterflies and different designs in butterfly wings, and I looked at insects like ladybugs and bees. Ive always liked paper cuts and stripes, so just by looking into that, I had the idea to do an insect slumber party. We did garden furniture and flower beds, and [the models are] actually sleeping in the beds.
How does it feel to be the It designer right now? Youve already got a J.Crew collaboration, a beauty range, and your own nail stickers.
Im just having fun. Theyre all really good opportunities for me. Its really exciting to be able to do all of these different things. J.Crew was such a nice project to work on. Jenna [Lyons] is amazing, and we worked closely on all of that. It was really fun and special.
And you did the shoes for Preen this morning.
I need to see them, I havent had a chance yet. I just met up with Justin [Thornton], and we went through the different shapes Id already done. They wanted a bit of vinyl, which was great because I worked a lot with vinyl last season. It was really organic and simple.
The floral pen you sent with your invite seemed like such a shout-out to the movie Clueless.
Ah, its one of my favorite films.
What other bits of pop culture are you obsessed with right now?
Katy B, who was singing here earlier, is amazing. Shes one of my favorite singers, and I think she has a really beautiful voice. I love a lot of British music. I dont really get a chance to go to the cinema [often], but I love Downton Abbey and Homeland.
Whos your favorite Downton character?
I like Lady Sybil, but she got killed off. I like Mary though, shes cool. And Daisy.
