Sister by Sibling for Barbie
Movin’ on up! Barbie–no last name required (though it’s Roberts, if you must know)–has traded in her Dream House for an even more to-die-for residence: A department in London’s Selfridges devoted entirely to her, complete with a designer-stocked closet.
In celebration of Barbie’s big move, three of London’s hottest up-and-coming designers, Fred Butler, Nasir Mazhar, and Sister by Sibling, have each created several custom-made outfits for the ultra petite fashion icon (Mazhar was even kind enough to let Barbie’s BF Ken in on the fun–albeit with a bucket over his head). Ranging from teensy intarsia knitwear to color blocked streetwear and sculptural origami creations that would make circa 2011 Lady Gaga go gaga, the getups are almost as varied as Barbie’s resume. This is, after all, the lady who went to outer space, ran for President, and most recently, became a paleontologist.
For Butler, designing for Barbie was personal. “I basically spent the majority of my childhood playtime making outfits for my Barbie,” he says. “The fascination never went so when I eventually studied fashion design, I used to create mock-up shapes on a Barbie.” Erin Moscow, Selfridges’s head of accessories and childrenswear, told Vogue UK, “These one-off dolls are something truly special, and a testament to how relevant and pioneering Barbie continues to be.”
Located within the Toy Shop on Selfridges’s fourth floor, the department will also display collector’s editions from Barbie’s extensive and enviable wardrobe archive (we’re talking Chanel, Prada, and over a billion pairs of shoes). We can only hope the store has hired lots of tiny security guards to ward off any tiny shoplifters.
