In all the roles Carine Roitfeld has played on the fashion stage–editor-in-chief, stylist, author, style icon –we’ve never seen her try her hand at designing. Until now.
In between producing issues of her biannual glossy, CR Fashion Book, and acting as global fashion director at Harper’s Bazaar, the former Vogue Paris Editor-in-Chief has somehow also found time for the roles of creative director, stylist, and designer for the high-fashion giant… Mercedes-Benz.
A new commercial–which the car company is pretending is not a commercial by calling it “Vision Accomplished: Fashion Film Spring/Summer 2014″–features model Sui He wearing a billowing, cape-like black dress designed by Roitfeld herself. Amidst a swelling soundtrack punctured by robotic, vaguely Daft Punk-esque beats, the commercial has Sui He sauntering towards a Mercedes-Benz S-Class “in a visual story of seduction between two unlikely aficionados.” Once you get past the weird machine-human sexual tension, the commercial’s visuals are sleek and pretty surrealist. Our only wish is that the dress got a little more of the focus, but it is a commercial for the car, after all.
Roitfeld had an all-star cast working with her on the project. In addition to He, whom Roitfeld included in the second issue of CR Fashion Book, V Magazine founder and long-time pal Stephen Gan, and photographers Max von Gumppenberg and Patrick Bienert also lent their expertise to the film.
