So, Why Did Diane von Furstenberg Leave Lincoln Center?

Early last month, designer and CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg offered an explanation as to why, after showing at IMG’s Lincoln Center venue since its establishment three and a half years ago, she was leaving to show elsewhere (along with Michael Kors and Vera Wang). She was leaving, she said, because she wanted to “do something special” for the 40th anniversary of the wrap dress.

If there was something special afforded by the venue at Spring Studios, where Furstenberg staged her Fall/Winter 2014 collection show Sunday night, I failed to see it. Furstenberg has historically done a good job of customizing the Theater at Lincoln Center — coating the runway floor and stage backdrop with one of her signature prints, and hanging objects like gold lips from the ceiling. Beyond an enlarged backdrop, everything set up on Sunday (the band, the lights, etc.) could have been done at Lincoln Center. The one great advantage of the place — floor-to-ceiling, east-facing windows, which so beautifully lit up Altuzarra’s show the day before, were of no consequence at DVF, as the show was staged at night.

The space also had a seeming drawback: far fewer seats. There were only two rows for guests, where previously there had been eight in a room more than twice the length. One would think that Furstenberg, with her many friends — not to mention, her general air of inclusiveness — would have wanted to gather as many as of them as possible to join in the celebration of her iconic dress style.

So why, then, did Furstenberg move? Were the reasons political? Is Lincoln Center simply no longer “cool”? Whatever the reason, I hope to see Furstenberg back at Lincoln Center — or, at least, an equally large venue — next season.
