Unless you count Kanye West, fashion designers aren’t typically on the radar of late night talk show bookers. At least, they don’t seem to be. But apparently being the subject of a Jay Z song gets one noticed. Thus, Tom Ford made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s show Wednesday night. And he was great.
With the Oscars imminent, Ford addressed his stance on red carpet dressing which, a) was not very positive and b) maybe sheds light on that Hayden Panettiere fiasco from the Golden Globes. “I usually only dress one woman,” he explained, going on to lament that red carpet dressing “has nothing to do with what’s going on in contemporary fashion,” and is “really a bubble of 1950s barbie clothes.” Well, alright then.
Before talking about the red carpet, Kimmel and Ford discussed an obvious topic of conversation: Jay Z. Ford divulged that he did in fact sign off on his namesake song after Jay Z shot him an email about it. Though he admitted he “had to go on rap translator to figure out what it meant.”
They then addressed the knockoff of a knockoff “Tom Ford 61″ jersey dress that Ford sent down the runway in London this month after Jay Z wore an identical t-shirt on stage. “You have the $65 one and the $6,500 one,” he quipped.
Our biggest takeaway was how well Ford did on the show, not to mention how mesmerizingly handsome he looked. We were also impressed the quality of Kimmel’s questions: he even touched on the business side of things. Watch the full interview below in two parts.
