Country music legend, marijuana advocate, and general bad ass Willie Nelson is embarking on a surprising new career path: The 80-year-old singer has turned model for John Varvatos’ fall 2013 campaign.
For the ads, shot by Danny Clinch at the historic Salisbury House in Des Moines, Iowa, Nelson lost his signature bandanna–but kept the waist-length braids (thank god!). His sons Lukas and Micah, 24 and 23, respectively, also star in the ads.
“John Varvatos and his team are great – his clothes look and feel good on your skin and are made for every man…and his sons,” Nelson said in the release.
Good taste in clothes isn’t the only thing Nelson passed down to his sons. Both Lukas and Micah are musicians (Lukas is the frontman of Promise of the Real, and Micah, Insects vs. Robots).
Varvatos made good use of the family talents: The father-son trio jam together in the campaign video. They also chat about “uncles” Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and developing their own personal style.
“I never had any plans oh, I’m gonna get me a style,” Nelson says. “It just kind of happens. You wind up with one after you kind of rip off all the other artists, then you wind up with your own self.”
As for his signature ‘do, Nelson says “I still don’t really like to get my haircut.”
